ABSTRACT: The model-building capabilities of the ASCEND (Advanced
System for Computations in ENgineering Design) modeling environment are
demonstrated. The language is briefly described to enhance understanding
of the use of its abstractions. Two model libraries are proposed for
mathematics and thermodynamics modeling where generality is preserved
for many applications. Graphic representations of the language are used to
demonstrate the advantages of taking a highly structured approach to model
generation.
