Downloading ASCEND IV
release 0.9 for Windows
Many people have installed
ASCEND IV on different windows systems (98, NT, 2000 and XP), and it
has worked as it should so we do not expect you to have difficulty
with this installation under any Windows operating system. The
installation does not use the Windows registry.
-
Register
yourself as an ASCEND
user, if you haven't already done so, otherwise continue to step 2. Our
user support is free, but subject to the demands of our primary
research. Most questions are addressed within 12 hours, though the hard
ones may take longer. (If your company's firewall will not let you
access or submit our registration form please send mail with your name,
e-mail address, and reason for interest in ascend to:
ascend+register@edrc.cmu.edu.)
- Click to download
zip file
(3.8M). Those closer to Europe might find an ftp-only mirror
in Portugal
but need to keep reading the directions posted here. (If your company's
firewall will not let you download from the links above, please try our
US ftp site given in step 7 below.)
- Once you've successfully downloaded ASCEND IV:
Unpack the zip file with
or a similar tool. It will leave
you a directory containing two subdirectories, ascend4 and Tcl, and a
README.txt file.
- Locate the executable ascopt4 in the directory
ascend4/ascend/bin and make a shortcut to it. Move the shortcut
to your desktop or some other easily found place. Start ASCEND by
double clicking the shortcut.
- For additional details on installing for Win311,
installing for Win98, obtaining a version containing VC++ 5.0 debugging
symbols, or building ASCEND under Windows, see our
PC installation instructions .
- For first-time users, please refer to
howto-ascend.pdf
Once installed, this version plus its documentation (which you download
separately) takes up about 30M of disk space.
- If your Web browser will not let you access some of the
links above, your network service provider has some sort of misguided
firewall in place. The work-around is to access the same files by
anonymous ftp.

Getting Started Using ASCEND IV For Windows
- Once you have
completed the installation process, double click on the ASCEND startup
icon that is on your desktop. ASCEND should start and will place four
windows on your screen. The largest reminds you to read our license. It
also tells you the version of ASCEND you have and the location in which
ASCEND expects to find your user data, \ascdata. The other three are:
Script, Console, and Library. at this point it may pay to read the documentation. However, if you are
impatient, continue.
- For a quick start, in the Script window, under File,
select "Read file ..." Browse into ascend4/models and pick
separation_demos.a4s. Using the mouse, highlight all the statements up
to and including the first SOLVE statement.
- Under Execute, select "Statements selected." Watch ASCEND
roll into action. When the system stops solving the first model, look
at it in the Browser window.
- If this has convinced you that ASCEND can do something you
want, burrow into our HowTos to learn more.
